Choosing Clothes For Your Man: What Your Man Wants You To Know

17 March 2009 180 views 5 Comments

There are two kinds of men: men who care about their clothing and how they look, and the ones you marry. You know the type–men who think that if the clothing can’t stand up on its own, it’s clean enough to wear again. Since your husband is one of the latter, chances are you want to–no, you need to help him with his clothing choices. Here’s some advice from a husband on what we husbands wish our wives knew about picking out our clothes.

* Choose wearability over style.
It doesn’t matter how trendy it is, if it is not comfortable, we won’t wear it without a fight. Or we might wear it once, then it might mysteriously disappear. Remember that style doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, though the people who make your shoes may have tried to convince you of that.

* Choose classic looks over trendy. A man is a man, and looks that worked for our fathers and grandfathers may be right for us. Classic doesn’t have to mean dated. A well cut suit that hangs well is timeless and a good investment for both you and your husband.

* Skin tone is important. In either casual or formal, seek a color palette that goes with your husband’s skin. Your husband will be oblivious to this nuance. The closest thing you’ll get out of him is, “This don’t look right. What else you got?”

* Body type is important. What are the strong points about your husband’s build? Just as when you choose your clothing, accentuate the positive. If he has a long waist, for example, he might be able to pull off the full three piece suit.

* Suitability matters. When you’re picking out clothes, stop and ask yourself, “Where will he wear this?” You need to pick styles and fabrics that go with your man’s activities and hobbies. For a mechanic, for example, casual and business casual clothing will get far more wear and are much more suitable than that business suit he will wears only at weddings and funerals. Hubby likes hot dots at the ball park? Get something you can wash, and not something that needs to be dry cleaned.

* What’s the overall effect? You like the outfit, and wonder of wonders, he likes the outfit. But what about the overall effect of the outfit? Clothes really can make the man, so what are these clothes saying about your man? Does your husband do business negotiations? A more subdued look would be best. Is he in a position of authority? Tasteful pinstripes, especially on a tall man, add to a powerful look.
